A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
