Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
