Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
