Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
